It was an odd result that seems fitting in such an odd year. The traditional first Friday in June golf day had to be rescheduled due to Covid-19. So we settled on Friday, September 11, figuring that the pandemic would be behind us by then. Of course, we misjudged it like everyone else. This year's turnout was down, several of the class deciding to pass on golf, with several of those who did golf deciding to pass on the after-golf activities too.
The golf was fun and it was great to see those familiar faces. It was a sunny and cool day, and Parkview was in OK shape, but time is really taking its toll on the quality of play. There were three par-3 holes and no one managed to hit any green, so nobody won the close-to-the-hole contest. One golfer managed to put a ball on the fairway on the long drive hole, but he skipped dinner. Applying past precedents, when you skip dinner, you don't get the award.
This year's overall winner was Doug Stephens with a low gross of 93, and a low net of 75, taking both prizes. In the past when someone won both, we split the award with the runner up, but even that was odd this year, with ties for second place. So we gave the prize money to the Cancer Society and gave the newly renamed Dave Peryer Memorial Trophy to Doug.
The after-golf activities were held at the Duchess of Markham, complete with outdoor refreshments and social distancing. A definite improvement over Kelseys.
