June 4, 2004 - Controversy rages at the IE6T7 8th annual golf day
Did he whiff or did
he hit the longest drive? That's the burning question that has wracked
Reunion 2004 with turmoil. An otherwise beautiful day was marred by
needless controversy.
David S. Lynch writes:
"On June
4, 2004 an incident occurred at The Maples of Ballantrae that will linger
in the minds of golf historians forever unless we do something about it
now. The incident I am referring to of course was the infamous "wiff
/ longest drive" by "The Swine".
Many questions surround this incident:
- Did he address the ball and wiff?
- Did he take a practice swing?
- How can someone who shot 105 hit the ball that far?
- Are his clubs legal?
- Are his balls legal???????
Golf is supposed
to be a game played by honourable gentlemen who abide by the
rules of the game and never, I repeat never, cheat. Unless we get
to the bottom
of this incident now, golf historians will be questioning what really
happened on that fateful day.
Theodore Swain, esq. responds. Listen here
A second
protest was lodged on the day following the event,
when it was discovered that Swain entered an incorrect
score. He had submitted his score as 105, yet on checking the addition,
it turned out he had actually shot 106!
In other notes,
golfers were shocked to discover that the Maples of Ballantrae has
changed the order of its holes, requiring a treacherous tee
shot over water on the first tee, and ending on a par 3. Photos below
show Phil Baldwin risking life and limb to save a stroke after duffing
his tee shot into the weeds. Also worthy of note are the increasing
number of retirements ... Kingsbooby just announced, Bagel has been
out for a few months, and Stephens is on the pogey this summer.
This year's overall
winner (under protest) is Ted Swain with a net 70. Finally, the low
gross did not go to Stephens; Lynch took it with a sparkling (?) 87.
Lynch was also close to the hole (if you call 8 feet close), and Swain
took the long drive under protest.
